Waste Management service begins December 1, 2026

Beginning December 1, 2026, Waste Management (WM) will replace Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District (WFWRD) as the garbage and recycling provider for residents served on public streets in Herriman. The primary purpose of the change is to help residents save on monthly costs for garbage and recycling services.

Your pickup days will stay the same, and garbage and recycling will both continue to be collected weekly. Your existing carts will stay at your home and receive WM branding.

WFWRD will continue providing garbage and recycling service through November 30. This page will serve as the central source for transition information, with updates added as more details become available.

What to know

  • Same pickup days. Continue following your current collection schedule.
  • Weekly garbage and recycling. Both services will remain weekly.
  • Keep your carts. WM will rebrand the carts already at your home.
  • Green-waste service is ending. You may keep your green cart for additional garbage service at the standard additional-cart price, or decline that additional cart.
  • Billing instructions are still to come. Details about accounts, payments, and the billing transition will be posted here.

Who is included?

The transition covers residential garbage and recycling service on public streets in Herriman, including homes in homeowners associations (HOAs) on public streets.

HOAs on private streets currently receiving WFWRD service must arrange their own service with a provider. WM is one option, but these HOAs will need to negotiate a separate service agreement. Residents in these communities should check with their HOA about its arrangements.

Commercial service is outside the City's residential agreement.

A service-area map and information to help residents confirm their coverage will be added here.

What will service cost?

One garbage cart and one recycling cart will cost $20.95 per month before the City's 3% franchise fee, or approximately $21.58 per month including that fee.

Monthly service rates before the City franchise fee
Service Monthly price before the 3% City franchise fee
One garbage cart, collected weekly $12.00
One recycling cart, collected weekly $8.95
Each additional garbage cart $12.00
Each additional recycling cart $8.95

The franchise fee will appear separately on the bill. Garbage rates include disposal, and recycling rates include processing.

The $21.58 amount is calculated from the approved rates and rounded to cents. Additional carts and applicable service or payment-method fees may increase the amount due.

Examples: how your service costs could change

The following examples compare current WFWRD rates supplied by City staff with the approved WM rates. WM amounts include the 3% City franchise fee.

Monthly household cost comparison, including the WM franchise fee
Household service Current WFWRD monthly cost WM monthly cost Monthly savings
One garbage cart and one recycling cart $26.00 $21.58 $4.42
Two garbage carts and one recycling cart $45.50 $33.94 $11.56

For a full year at these rates, the estimated comparison is:

Estimated annual household cost comparison, including the WM franchise fee
Household scenario WFWRD annual cost WM annual cost Annual savings
One garbage cart and one recycling cart $312.00 $258.96 $53.04
Two garbage carts and one recycling cart $546.00 $407.28 $138.72
One garbage cart, one recycling cart, and seasonal green-waste service with WFWRD; keep the green cart as a second garbage cart with WM $432.00 $407.28 $24.72

About the green-cart example: This calculation assumes WFWRD's seasonal green-waste service costs $120 per year, as shown in the staff comparison, in addition to $26 per month for garbage and recycling. The total is $432 per year. Keeping the green cart under WM provides an additional garbage cart year-round, bringing the monthly WM cost to $33.94. Separate green-waste collection ends, so the services in this example are different.

Annual estimates use 12 months at the listed rates and multiply the rounded monthly WM amount by 12. They exclude other applicable charges and future rate changes. Actual annual totals may differ slightly depending on billing rounding. These examples do not establish invoice dates, payment schedules, or how the transition bills will be handled.

What happens to green-waste service?

The separate green-waste collection program will not continue under WM.

If you currently have a green-waste cart, you can choose to:

  • Keep it as an additional garbage cart for $12 per month, plus the 3% City franchise fee—$12.36 per month including the fee.
  • Decline the additional cart if you do not want the extra garbage service and charge.

A green cart kept for garbage service will be collected as garbage; it will no longer be part of a separate green-waste program.

Instructions for making your choice, the deadline, and what will happen to carts residents decline will be posted here. Information about other yard-waste disposal options will also be added.

What do I need to do?

Continue using your existing carts and following your current WFWRD collection schedule before the transition.

If you have a green-waste cart, consider whether you want to keep it for additional garbage service. Watch this page for instructions on how to make that choice.

Account setup and payment instructions have not yet been confirmed. We will add details about the final WFWRD bill, the first WM bill, automatic payments, and any steps residents need to take. An automatic transfer of existing payment arrangements has not been confirmed.

If your HOA is on private streets and currently receives WFWRD service, check with your HOA about its plans to arrange service independently.

Frequently asked questions

Will my pickup day change?

No. Your garbage and recycling pickup days will remain the same as your WFWRD pickup days. WM begins providing service December 1, 2026.

Will recycling still be collected every week?

Yes. Both garbage and recycling will be collected weekly.

When should I put my carts out?

For WM service, place your carts at the curb before 7 a.m. on your collection day. Collection may take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Will I receive new carts?

Your existing carts will remain in place and be rebranded by WM. Details about the rebranding schedule and any instructions for making carts available will be posted here.

Residents with green-waste carts will have the choice described above.

Can I request a smaller cart?

No. Carts smaller than 96 gallons will not be available.

Do I need to create a WM account or change my automatic payments?

Those instructions are not yet available. The approved agreement provides for WM to handle billing monthly, but the account setup process, payment options, invoice timing, and automatic-payment arrangements still need to be confirmed.

Instructions will be posted here when available.

Could I receive a WFWRD bill after December 1?

Yes. WFWRD may send a final or corrected bill for service provided before the transition. Charges for that earlier service remain payable to WFWRD.

Information about final billing, prepaid balances, credits, and refunds will be added when confirmed.

What can I recycle with WM?

For WM service beginning December 1, accepted materials include:

  • Aluminum, steel, and tin cans.
  • Plastic bottles marked #1 with screw tops, and plastic bottles and containers marked #2 or #5.
  • Glass food and beverage containers of any color.
  • Newspaper, mail, magazines, uncoated paper and paperboard, and uncoated corrugated cardboard.

Recyclables must be empty, dry, loose, and unshredded. Do not bag them. Items smaller than four inches in any dimension are excluded.

Keep plastic bags, food, liquids, yard waste, batteries, electronics, and hazardous materials out of the recycling cart. A full recycling guide will be added here.

Could there be charges beyond the monthly service rate?

Yes. Depending on the circumstances, charges may apply for additional carts, overfilled carts, contamination in recycling, requested cart exchanges, certain payment methods, and other account or service issues.

The agreement includes a 60-day education period at the start of service. After that period, its enforcement provisions allow a $5 overage charge and a $5 charge for repeated recycling contamination. Some material may be refused for collection. A requested cart exchange is $75; separate rules apply to damaged carts.

More information about payment options and service charges will be added here.

What if my cart is damaged?

WM will replace carts damaged during its collection service or made unusable through ordinary wear without a fee. Charges may apply for carts that are lost, stolen, or damaged through no fault of WM.

Repair and replacement request instructions will be added here.

What should I do if WM misses my pickup?

WM will handle missed-pickup reports after the transition. The phone number, online reporting option, and instructions will be posted here.

Carts must be at the curb before 7 a.m. A cart placed out late is not considered a missed pickup under the service agreement.

Will holidays affect collection?

WM's collection holidays are New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The agreement provides for collection on the next business day when one of these holidays falls on a scheduled pickup day.

A holiday calendar and instructions for affected routes will be posted here.

Will there be a way to dispose of bulky items?

The agreement provides for two bulky-item drop-off events each year, in May and October. Event dates, locations, accepted items, and participation details will be posted as they become available.

These are drop-off events. The agreement does not establish regular curbside bulky-item pickup.
