Signs
If you are planning to install a permanent sign (monument sign, wall or awning sign, ground sign such as directional or menu board type signs), whether the sign will use electricity or not, a building permit is required. If installing more than one sign at the same project, only one permit is required.
If you are installing a temporary sign such as a banner, promotional sign or construction sign, please use the Planning Department’s Temporary Sign Application Form.
Requirements for submitting a permit application for a sign
- Fill out the online Sign Permit Application Form and attach all of the following items.
- Site Plan showing location of sign(s) and setback to property line for monument signs.
- Construction Plans including:
- Elevations – typically a color representation of the exterior of the building and where the sign(s) will be placed, including dimensions of the wall and of the sign(s).
- Attachment and electrical plans with Utah State Licensed Structural Engineer’s wet stamp (see wall sign sample).
- For monument signs, construction details showing footing depth, rebar placement, etc. (see monument sign sample).
- Architectural Review Committee approval if applicable (for Monument Signs only).
- Applicant’s Affidavit – authorization from property owner.
- Valuation, including costs for labor and materials to complete the project (can be a contract, bid sheet or invoice).
For monument signs, if they do not meet the following standard, then a Conditional Use application must be approved through the Planning Department prior to submitting a building permit.
Monument Sign Standard: 18 inches of stone/brick to match the building is required on one side and at the base. Maximum height for monument signs is 6 feet.
Permit fees for a sign building permit are based on the number of signs being installed and whether they are electrical or not. Please call our office for a fee estimate.
Plan review may take approximately 14-21 business days, after which we may require corrections that need to be made to your plans. The permit will be issued after plans are approved and all fees are paid.
Signs must be inspected for safety and code compliance. See Required Inspections for details.
